Trouble’s brewing around the frontier in the new trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming remake of classic Western The Magnificent Seven, and it’ll take an accordingly heroic team to stop it.
Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt lead the ragtag band of outlaws and gunslingers that band together to keep the Old West town of Rose Krick safe from the likes of no-good varmint Peter Sarsgaard in the film, due September 23rd. John Sturges’ 1960 original was a who’s who of macho movie stars, collecting the likes of Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen and James Coburn; in addition to tapping Pratt and constant collaborator Washington, Fuqua has enlisted Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio (who once worked as a bodyguard for original Magnificent Seven cast member Yul Brynner), Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier.
The new trailer hits all the required Western checkmarks: painterly wide shots of the American countryside, grizzled boozehounds exchanging tough words in saloons, buddy-buddy banter between new allies. (“I’ve always wanted to blow something up,” Pratt says. “That’s not a plan!” replies Washington.)
The original film was itself an Americanized remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic Seven Samurai, which would provide numerous other movies with a bare-bones plot template of a mismatched squad of warriors protecting a town for honor.
The Magnificent Seven opens wide on September 23rd.
